US Secretary of State Says Venezuelan Elections Should Be Held Next Year

Marco Rubio indicated elections in Venezuela might occur next year but could not assure timing before the 2029 US election.

On January 20, 2029, Marco Rubio, the United States Secretary of State, indicated that elections in Venezuela should ideally take place next year, though he declined to guarantee that they would happen before President Donald Trump's term ends.
Rubio added that Venezuela still needs several critical steps to create the right conditions for a free and fair vote. Trump’s presidential term is set to expire on January 20, 2029, and a prior statement from the US secretary of energy had suggested elections would be held while Trump was still in office. Trump himself told Time magazine in early October that it was too early to hold elections in Venezuela.
In a separate address to the UN General Assembly, Venezuela’s acting president Delcy Rodriguez said the country would hold a presidential election once its people considered the time right, not when they received orders from abroad.
An unverified Facebook post has circulated claiming that Marco Rubio is considering resigning after Democrats gained control of both the House and the Senate. The claim remains unconfirmed.
