In brief
On June 23, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department issued an apology and deleted a post expressing sympathy for victims of recent U.S. airstrikes in Iran, emphasizing the need to monitor local implications.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department faced significant backlash and public scrutiny after posting a message on social media that expressed sympathy for the “victims and families impacted” by American military strikes on three Iranian nuclear targets over the weekend. The post, which was shared on X (formerly Twitter), has since been removed following an apology from the department. In a statement issued on Sunday, the Sheriff’s Department described the original post as “offensive and inappropriate,” asserting that it did not align with the views of Sheriff Robert G. Luna or the department itself. This statement was reinforced when the department updated similar messages on Facebook and Instagram to remove the controversial line. These adjusted posts now state that the department is "closely monitoring the situation overseas alongside our local, state, and federal partners."Screenshots of the contentious post were circulated by local media, showing it fondly stating, “Our hearts go out to the victims and the families impacted by the recent bombings in Iran.” The department clarified that as a law enforcement agency, it refrains from commenting on foreign policy or military matters, and they are currently conducting an internal investigation to ascertain how such a post was made and published in the first place. The context of the backlash is compounded by the diverse demographics within Los Angeles County, which is home to a significant Iranian community, as well as a large Jewish population. According to the Migration Policy Institute, nearly one-third of the approximately 400,000 Iranian immigrants in the U.S. reside in or around the Los Angeles area, earning neighborhoods like Westwood the nickname “Tehrangeles.” Furthermore, around 500,000 Jews live in Los Angeles, making it the second-largest Jewish community in the country as per 2021 data from Brandeis University. Although the Sheriff’s Department stressed that there are currently no specific threats to residents, they urged the public to remain vigilant. They also announced an increase in patrols at places of worship and other sensitive locations throughout the county as a precautionary measure.
