In brief

Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al‑Thani confirmed the Arab nation’s ongoing mediation work between the United States and Iran, citing continued progress and the prevention of regional escalation. He highlighted recent missile strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island, noting that damage remains unverified. The U.S. remains open to a diplomatic solution, even as the country navigates post‑midterm election uncertainties.

At the presidential palace in Baabda, Lebanon, on October 16, Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al‑Thani told reporters that Qatar is actively mediating between the United States and Iran and that this work is preventing the situation from spiraling out of control.

The Prime Minister said Washington remains willing to find a solution, stressing that the U.S. administration has not changed its stance after the November mid‑term elections. He noted “significant progress” had been made toward a settlement and expressed confidence that a concrete agreement could be reached.

"We cannot wait to reach a perfect agreement; we hope to reach a good agreement," Al‑Thani said, underscoring Qatar’s determination to keep diplomatic options open.

Separately, Iran’s semi‑official Tasnim news agency reported that two missiles struck Qeshm Island, though it added that no official information on damage has yet been released. The United States has not announced any attack on Iranian targets, and no confirmation of casualties or structural damage has appeared in any official source.

Iran has also been promoting a seven‑day plan, calling on Washington to lift its blockade of Iranian ports, unfreeze assets and approve an Iranian‑backed route through the Strait of Hormuz. The proposal has so far been rejected by the U.S., which continues to weigh options amid growing regional uncertainty.

While the news of Qeshm Island attacks signals heightened tensions, Qatar’s statement suggests that diplomatic channels remain active and possibly effective in preventing a broader flare‑up.
