In brief

Dr. Anne Merriman, known as the "Mother of Palliative Care" in Uganda, has died at 90, leaving a legacy of compassion and medical innovation.

Dr. Anne Merriman, a key figure in the development of palliative care in Africa, has passed away at the age of 90 in her home in Kampala, Uganda. Her cousin, Chris Merriman, confirmed that the cause of death was respiratory failure. Raised in the context of global disparities in healthcare, Dr. Merriman's journey began in Singapore during the 1980s, where she worked as a doctor. She was deeply affected by the suffering of terminally ill patients who lacked access to adequate pain management. Recognizing that traditional treatments like intravenous morphine were out of reach financially for many, she sought a more cost-effective solution. By collaborating with a pharmacist at the National University of Singapore, Dr. Merriman developed a simpler formula for powdered morphine. This innovation allowed for easy, at-home management of pain, making it accessible to more patients. She enthusiastically regarded this breakthrough as “a game changer” in her quest to deliver compassionate care.In 1993, she founded Hospice Africa Uganda and embarked on a mission to establish a culturally adaptable hospice model throughout the continent. Her efforts have since impacted approximately 40,000 patients and provided training to nearly 10,000 healthcare professionals across 37 nations.Dr. Merriman's work has not only made an indelible mark on palliative care but has also highlighted the importance of equitable access to healthcare for those in need. Her dedication to improving the lives of terminally ill patients cements her legacy as a compassionate pioneer in medicine.
