A Wizz Air passenger flight traveling from London to Sofia was forced to divert to Budapest on Monday after a bomb threat was received, Hungarian authorities said. The aircraft, which was en route across Europe, was brought to an immediate stop over Hungarian airspace and subsequently directed toward the capital's airport to ensure the safety of all on board.
The Ministry of Defense confirmed that Hungarian Gripen fighter jets were scrambled to escort the diverted airliner, serving as a protective escort during the landing and subsequent security clearance process. Defense Minister Romulusz Ruszin‑Szendi said the jets were deployed promptly after the threat was reported, ensuring that no passenger or crew members were put in danger.

"Hungarian Gripen fighter jets were scrambled on Monday to escort a Wizz Air passenger plane flying from London to Sofia after a bomb threat forced it to divert to Budapest," he told reporters.
While the Minister confirmed the official actions taken by Hungarian forces, no further information has been released regarding the source of the threat or the content of the warning that prompted the diversion. The passenger flight was cleared to continue its journey to Sofia thereafter, with no injuries or incidents reported among the crew or passengers during the emergency maneuver. Hungarian airspace remains on high alert, and all flights over the region will be monitored closely for the remainder of the day as authorities investigate the incident.
