In brief
France’s gross domestic product contracted 0.1 % in Q3 2026, reversing a streak of growth that began in 2024. Household consumption rose 0.4 % and government spending grew 0.3 %, but exports dropped 1.7 %, outweighing small increases in imports and domestic demand. The country’s economy faces inflation expectations of 3.4 % and calls for fiscal consolidation, according to the economy minister.
France’s preliminary gross domestic product data released Friday showed the economy contracted 0.1 percent in the third quarter of 2026, according to figures from the national statistics institute INSEE. The decline follows three successive quarters of growth that began in the second quarter of 2024.
Net domestic demand, excluding inventories, grew only 0.1 percentage point in Q3, the same as the previous period, while household consumption accelerated 0.4 percent from the 0.2 percent rise in Q2. Government consumption added 0.3 percent, after increasing 0.4 percent in Q2. These positive components were offset by a negative contribution of 0.6 percentage points from foreign trade.
Exports fell 1.7 percent, reversing a 2.8 percent gain in the previous quarter, whereas imports rose a marginal 0.1 percent after a 0.9 percent increase. The trade imbalance contributed the bulk of the negative growth.
INSEE forecasts France’s consumer price index to surge 3.4 percent year‑on‑year in October, up from 3.1 percent in September, driven mainly by rising energy prices.
Economy and Finance Minister Roland Lescure said in an interview with Franceinfo that “Growth has been absent for three consecutive quarters” and warned that without meeting fiscal consolidation targets the country could “hit a wall.”

Unconfirmed, a macro‑economic forecast model on Trading Economics projects France’s Q3 GDP growth to be 0.10 percent by the end of the quarter. The model’s prediction has not yet been validated by official data releases.
