In brief

Hurricane Humberto has made its presence felt in Bermuda, with authorities on alert as strong winds, heavy rain, and dangerous seas are anticipated. Located about 275 miles west of Bermuda, Humberto is a Category 2 storm with sustained winds of 100 mph. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Imelda is trailing closely, potentially impacting the island within days. Local officials urge residents to prepare as both storms threaten to bring severe weather and possible flooding.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The outer bands of Hurricane Humberto lashed Bermuda on Tuesday, while Tropical Storm Imelda is following closely behind. A hurricane watch remains in effect for the island, with forecasters warning of treacherous seas, strong winds, and heavy rain.

Humberto was approximately 275 miles (440 kilometers) west of Bermuda as a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph (155 kph), moving north-northwest at 17 mph (28 kph). The storm is expected to pass well north and west of the island, with severe weather potential continuing through Wednesday.

Tropical Storm Imelda, currently about 180 miles (290 kilometers) north of the Bahamas with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 kph), is projected to affect Bermuda by Wednesday afternoon.

Bermuda's Minister of National Security, Michael Weeks, described the upcoming weather as “serious” and strongly urged the public to prepare for the impact of both storms.

Officials note that despite the wealthy territory's robust infrastructure, potential damage could still be significant as clouds and rain from both storms threaten the area.

“Please take this warning seriously and ensure you have provisions ready,” Weeks stated. Rain accumulations could reach 2 inches (5 centimeters) from Humberto and up to 4 inches (10 centimeters) from Imelda, raising concerns about flash flooding.

Additionally, Humberto is generating dangerous swells, affecting the northern Caribbean, Bahamas, and U.S. East Coast. Earlier reports indicated that Imelda caused two fatalities in Cuba due to severe weather-related incidents, causing landslides and floods that have cut off several communities.

With preparations underway, Bermudians are advised to stay informed and vigilant as the storms approach.
