Former Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has been confirmed as the new head coach of the France national football team, succeeding long‑time manager Didier Deschamps.
Deschamps, who has steered France for 14 years, stepped down after the team’s exit from the 2026 World Cup semi‑final against Spain. Zidane, who won a World Cup with France in 1998, last managed Real Madrid until 2021.
The 54‑year‑old will sign a contract that will see him lead the national squad through the qualification campaign for the 2030 World Cup in Qatar.
In a statement, Zidane said it was a great source of pride to take charge of the French side: “There’s nothing greater than the French national team… so it’s a joy and a great source of pride to become the manager of this national team.”
He added, “It’s also a responsibility. I want to thank the French Football Federation for their confidence and for recognising the 14 years of service from Didier and his staff.”
Zidane concluded that he has high ambitions for the national team, aiming for success at the next World Cup and beyond.
