A wildfire in the foothills of the French Pyrenees has forced the evacuation of more than 10,000 people from towns around Trévillach near Perpignan. The fire, which has burned at least 4,600 hectares, is flaring up rapidly and is still spreading across the region.
French officials warned that strong winds could further fan the blaze, while the Interior Minister urged residents to remain alert. Residents feared the flames came within 300 metres of their homes and were shocked by how fast the fire spread.
The crisis also disrupted the Tour de France, with organisers asking fans and unessential personnel to stay away from the finish in Les Angles to keep traffic clear for emergency vehicles.
EU President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the EU would dispatch four aircraft based in Cyprus and Sweden to support the firefighting effort. The blaze also crossed the border into Spain, where more than 2,200 hectares of the natural reserve of Les Gavarres were destroyed.
High temperatures continue in southwest France, with heat waves pushing temperatures above 40°C in parts of Portugal and Spain. Experts warn that the lack of rain and persistent heat will keep wildfire risk high until next week.
