Uefa Declares Lost Confidence in FIFA President Gianni Infantino

Uefa has publicly expressed a loss of confidence in Gianni Infantino over the abandoned FIFA investment plan.

Late on Saturday, Infantino announced that FIFA would no longer pursue the proposal to sell stakes in its competitions to private investors. The plan, which had already attracted criticism from the continental confederations, is now being abandoned after scrutiny from the governing bodies and key national associations.

Uefa’s statement hailed the withdrawal as a “victory for the whole game” and accused Infantino of not delivering on promises made when he was elected in 2016, citing his pledge that all FIFA money belongs to national associations and should be used for development.

FIFA’s chief operating officer Kevin Lamour said the organization had been “deceived” about the project, while senior adviser Carlos Cordeiro resigned, calling the deal a bad one that could jeopardise football’s future.

Other football confederations have joined the chorus of opposition, and the fallout could see further repercussions for FIFA’s leadership as clubs, coaches and fans call for a more transparent and inclusive governance model.
