In a dramatic move, UK officials have threatened sanctions and a ban on goods from Israeli settlements to stop the development of a 1,200‑home plan near Ma’ale Adumim. The plan, known as E1, sits on the border between Israel and the West Bank. Israel’s foreign minister retaliated by threatening to close the UK consulate in Jerusalem. The dispute highlights the broader tensions over settlement expansion and international legal challenges.

UK Targets Major Israeli Settlement Plan Near Ma’ale Adumim

'England is in a position to freeze the support for illegal activity,' said UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband. He added he will ban imports of goods from settlements deemed illegal by the International Court of Justice.

The International Court of Justice has already ruled the construction of new Israeli settlements in the West Bank as a violation of international law. The UK’s new sanctions are an EU‑aligned budgetary measure aimed at deterring further expansion.

'Ethnic cleansing is being carried out by settler terrorists,' Miliband said, accusing the Israeli government of tacitly supporting the growth of E1.

E1 sits between the Israeli city of Jericho and the Israeli settlement of Ma’ale Adumim. The proposed 1,200‑home development would push the front line of the West Bank further into the Palestinian territory. The planning is part of Israel’s larger expansion setting that the UN condemns as a violation of the Gaza blockade and the West Bank occupation, under the International Conference on the Law of the Sea and the Gaza Targeting Program.

'Israel has opened tenders for the construction of some 1,200 settlement homes at the proposed site,' the BBC correspondent Lucy Williamson tells us. 'It follows an appeal from the European Union that the Plan was done without any consultation with the UN, which was a mistake and (it was) contrary to international law, after the UN recently established that the settlement is illegal.'

Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has responded by demanding the UK 'to purge his legal, political, humanitarian and moral passport and the British Consulate in Jerusalem'. He claims that the British Consulate has been being used for funding calls for an alliance in the West Bank.

'The British Consulate is no longer a diplomatic campus, we have an identity crisis about continuing business with Israel,' Sonia Ibe said, appointed by the UK's Foreign Office. He added that the foreign minister will be talking to anyone who wants to discuss the decision, if (they) have a better point of view.

These events come as multiple analyses in the British Parliament to see how the sanctions comparison, reach a resolution against EU, or the environment at the EU. The analysis stresses that Israel’s plans to build the E1 settlement have potential to bring down the option of reconciling at the 8th and 9th border settlements plan.
