Two people have died and an evacuation is under way after twin wildfires broke out on the Greek island of Salamina.
Fire officials reported that nearly 200 firefighters were engaged in extinguishing the flames and preventing them from merging into a single, larger blaze.
The first fire started at 14:40 local time (12:40 GMT) and spread rapidly due to high winds, on a day when the island was under a high wildfire risk alert.
About 90 residents have so far been evacuated by sea, a coast‑guard spokesman told Greek broadcaster ERT.
Five patrol boats have been dispatched to the area, with several private vessels being mobilised to assist the relief operation.
An array of aircraft and 50 fire engines have also been deployed to help control the fires.
Salamina Deputy Mayor Thodoris Zannis said firefighters were trying to prevent the fires from igniting a mountain on the island and merging into a single major wildfire.
Salamina lies just west of Athens and has a population of around 37,000, many of them elderly.
European firefighters have been confronting a series of wildfires over the weekend, fuelled by high heat and low humidity.
