Trump settles $5 million damages to E Jean Carroll

In a civil case held in New York, a bipartisan jury found former President Donald Trump liable for sexually abusing and defaming 82‑year‑old columnist E Jean Carroll. The verdict awarded her more than $5 million, a figure that now includes the interest accrued during the appeal process.

Trump, who pushed to delay payment in hopes of reversing the appellate ruling, was ordered by a judge to release the funds to a court‑controlled account. “Today, we are pleased to report that she has received the damages payment the jury awarded her as a result of that verdict,” lawyer Roberta Kaplan told reporters.

Carroll’s claim focuses on an alleged assault that took place in the mid‑1990s inside a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. She has also accused Trump of posting a denial of her allegations on his Truth Social platform in 2022.

The case had attracted political commentary, with Trump’s lawyers calling the ruling a “hoax” and a “witch hunt” that was allegedly funded by Democrats. The settlement now closes a controversial chapter that captivated the media and courtroom alike.
