Teenagers Seriously Injured After Sword Attack at Brinell School in Sweden

At roughly 14:00 local time on Friday, police were dispatched to Brinell School in Fagersta, where a sword attack was reported.

Investigators said two teenagers sustained serious injuries, while a third student was also wounded and the extent of the latter injury has not yet been confirmed.

Officials confirmed that the suspect was apprehended at the scene; police officers fired a warning shot that struck him in the leg. The suspect was taken into custody for further questioning.

As security measures were implemented nationwide, the authorities placed eight surrounding schools under lockdown. The lockdowns were later lifted as the threat was contained and no further danger to the public was identified.

Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described the incident as a “serious incident,” noting that the motives behind the attack remain unclear and that the police are working intensively to uncover all details.

Brinell School, which hosts just under 500 students, had only recently resumed classes following the summer break. The school is located 170 kilometres northwest of Stockholm.

Sweden has seen a number of attacks on educational institutions in recent years. In 2025, a mass shooting at an adult education centre in Orebro left 11 people dead, prompting the government to tighten gun laws.

Historical precedents include a 2022 incident in Malmö, where an 18‑year‑old student killed two teachers, and a 2015 sword attack at a school in Trollhattan that claimed one teacher and one student’s life.
