Swiss tourist Luzian Andrin Zgraggen, 26, received a one‑year prison sentence after a video in which he described the quiet beach during Nyepi as “crazy” sparked outrage in Bali.

On 19 March 2026, Nyepi, Indonesia’s Hindu Day of Silence, was observed. The holiday sees the island shut down for airports and restricts noise, electricity and public gatherings for everyone, regardless of religion.

Zgraggen filmed himself breaking the ban by walking onto the empty beach and posting an Instagram clip that included expletives. Authorities arrested him in March, citing the video as an insult to Balinese faith.

During the trial the judge said the defendant’s actions offended Balinese people and provoked public outrage. Zgraggen apologized, saying he did not understand Nyepi’s restrictions and did not intend to insult the community.

Tourists have been detained before for violating Nyepi rules, and Bali has warned against offensive acts and tourist enclaves that disrespect local culture.

Last year, Bali welcomed a record 7 million visitors, and officials say they will tighten scrutiny and crack down on unruly foreigners.
