Swiss Tourist Sentenced for Criticising Bali’s Day of Silence

On Bali’s sacred Hindu holiday of Nyepi, the island’s everyday bustle is replaced by silence and stillness. A 26‑year‑old Swiss tourist filmed himself walking onto an empty beach, calling the scene “crazy” and harshly critiquing the event on social media. The clip sparked outrage among the Balinese community and led to his arrest in March.

The court said his remarks offended the spiritual customs and “hurt faith” of the local people. He was sentenced to one year in prison. In court, he admitted he was unaware of the restrictions and expressed remorse, apologising to the Balinese population.

With tourism rebounding past its pandemic lull, Bali authorities have already detained and deported tourists for violating Nyepi guidelines, and they are tightening scrutiny to curb unruly foreign visitors and protect the island’s cultural heritage.
