Background of the Case

Bloomberg’s piece, titled “Singapore Mansion Deals Are Increasingly Shrouded in Secrecy”, analysed how affluent buyers use shell structures to conceal ownership of high‑value Good Class Bungalows. The article listed Shanmugam’s sale of an S$88 million bungalow to an unnamed buyer via a trust, and Tan’s purchase of a S$27 million Good Class Bungalow through a “non‑caveated deal” that obscures the buyer’s identity.

After the article’s release in December 2024, the ministers pursued legal action, alleging the piece implied wrongdoing, secrecy and possible money‑laundering. The court found that, taken as a whole, the story presented the ministers as taking advantage of loopholes to evade scrutiny.

Bloomberg’s Defence and Response

Bloomberg insisted the coverage was factual and served the public interest. Editor‑in‑Chief John Micklethwait said, “We argued at trial that our reporting was accurate and served an important public interest.” Despite the verdict, Bloomberg pledged to comply with the court order yet maintained its stance.

POFMA Correction Notice

Separately, Singapore’s Protection From Online Falsehoods And Manipulation Act (POFMA) required Bloomberg to post a correction notice on the article. Bloomberg complied, appending a note that it respected the court’s decision but remained confident in its reporting integrity.
