BOSTON (RTWNews) — A severe winter storm has resulted in over a thousand flight cancellations and delays across the Northeast and Great Lakes regions, impacting holiday travelers during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

As of Saturday morning, New York City recorded just under three inches of snow, about half of what was initially predicted by weather forecasts. Flight-tracking service FlightAware reported that at least 1,500 flights were canceled from Friday night into Saturday morning.

Airports including Newark Liberty International, John F. Kennedy International, and LaGuardia issued warnings via social media platform X, cautioning travelers about potential flight disruptions due to the inclement weather.

The National Weather Service has advised that hazardous travel conditions are likely to persist from the Great Lakes through the northern mid-Atlantic and into southern New England, with risks of power outages and tree damage expected. However, forecasters predict that the storm is likely to weaken by Saturday morning.

Ahead of the storm, New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for over half of the state, while Acting New Jersey Governor Tahesha Way announced a state of emergency for the entire state of New Jersey, attributing it to the dangerous weather conditions caused by heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain.

This storm will cause dangerous road conditions and impact holiday travel, Way said in a statement. We are urging travelers to avoid travel during the storm and allow crews to tend to the roads. Drivers should plan their travel accordingly, monitor conditions and road closures, and follow all safety protocols.
