Rohan Dennis Pleads Guilty to Driving After Wife’s Fatal Car Crash

Rohan Dennis, a celebrated Australian Olympian cyclist, has admitted to driving while disqualified – a charge that follows the tragic 2023 incident in which his wife, former Olympian Melissa Hoskins, was killed by a car he operated.

In May 2024, Dennis faced a magistrate in Adelaide after police stopped him driving with two children in the car – a clear breach of his five‑year disqualification. The court was also presented with evidence that Dennis had previously pleaded guilty to a single aggravated count of creating the likelihood of harm. Prosecutors consequently dismissed two more serious charges, securing a plea deal.

The 2023 court proceedings revealed a tense domestic scene: Dennis had left the house after an argument over renovations, leading to the fatal crash. Hoskins, who challenged a passively constructed rally of support from the sporting community, was forced to fall from the car’s bonnet and was later fatally injured. While the court ruled that she was not criminally responsible for her own death, it marked Dennis’s conduct as recklessly dangerous.

Legal documents indicate that Dennis’s 17‑month sentence was suspended, under a two‑year good‑behaviour bond, alongside a five‑year driving ban that began at the December 2023 incident. The Magistrate’s court is now tasked with deciding whether to refer the matter to a higher court concerning both the driving offence and the breach of the bond. Dennis is scheduled to return for further hearing in September.
