Police were called to the Brinell School in Fagersta shortly after 14:00 local time on Friday, where officers arrested an 18‑year‑old suspect who had unleashed a sword attack. A police update said officers had fired at the suspect before detaining him.

The attack caused one death and seriously wounded two teenage boys, with an additional person suffering minor injuries. Eight nearby schools were placed under lockdown, which the authorities later lifted after a state of high alert was declared in Västmanland.

The suspect was wearing a helmet and was reported to be a former student of Brinell School. Swedish Police are investigating motives, and authorities have confirmed that the public faces no additional danger.

In a post on X, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called the incident a "serious incident" and said police were working very intensively. King Carl XVI Gustaf responded with dismay, noting his thoughts were with those affected.
