Madonna pays tribute to ‘genius, otherworldly’ producer William Orbit

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Madonna mourned the passing of music producer William Orbit, who died at age 69 on July 23. She described him as a “magic button” that opened a galaxy of unrealised dreams and said his music gave her a “magic carpet” to explore new creative horizons.

Orbit, whose real name was William Wainwright, brought a revolutionary sound to pop music when he co‑produced Madonna’s 1998 album Ray of Light. The record blended electronic dance, ambient techno and trip‑hop, and won three Grammy Awards, cementing Orbit’s reputation as an innovative force.

Beyond Ray of Light, Orbit collaborated on Madonna’s 2000 album Music and contributed to several tracks on her 2012 album MDNA. He also worked with Blur, Pink, and All Saints, earning a place among the industry’s most versatile producers.

In her tribute, Madonna reflected on the serendipity of meeting Orbit: “I had an epiphany when I met you and started working with you.” She recalled studio sessions as “church‑like” and praised his “genius way of hearing music.”

Orbit’s death was announced by his family, who spoke of “profound sadness.” While Madonna has worked with many other producers over the years, she insists that the magic time spent with Orbit remains unforgettable.
