In brief
Lahore, the capital of Punjab Province, faces a dire air quality crisis as authorities implement drastic measures to mitigate health risks amid record pollution levels.
As Lahore grapples with a pervasive smog, officials have enacted a series of urgent public health measures. The province of Punjab, home to 70 million residents, is witnessing its citizens being affected by an alarming spike in air pollution that has resulted in widespread hospitalizations and school closures. This week, Lahore recorded its highest Air Quality Index levels, with the city noted for having the worst air quality globally, according to IQAir. As a result, the provincial government has ordered that all primary and secondary schools shut until November 17. The decision has led to half of the workforce in Lahore, which has a population of 13 million, being told to remain at home to minimize health hazards linked to the toxic conditions.Local resident Safdar Masih described the situation starkly, stating, “The air feels thick, and it’s exhausting just to breathe.” With the smog even infiltrating private residences, many are left in distress as the know-how of managing air quality becomes increasingly pivotal.Marriyum Aurangzeb, a senior minister in Punjab, labeled the current state a critical situation, warning that residents should expect the air quality issues to persist for possibly ten more days. In a drive to tackle pollution sources, officials are intervening by impounding vehicles that emit high levels of pollution, dismantling kilns, banning rickshaws, and curbing barbecue operations that are major contributors to the haze.In response, authorities are encouraging the public to wear masks whenever venturing outside, underscoring the seriousness of the health crisis unfolding in Lahore.
