As Iranians gear up for Nowruz, the Persian New Year, excitement is tempered by the backdrop of ongoing conflict. The traditional celebration, which marks the arrival of spring and the renewal of life, is tinged with uncertainty as many citizens grapple with the impact of war.
Mina, a woman in her 50s from Damavand, expressed her sorrow: This year will be different. Every day feels so long. It's like I've lost track of time. This sentiment resonates across the country as many families face the harsh realities of war.
Nowruz, which falls on March 20 this year, is one of the oldest celebrations in the world, with a tradition extending back over 3,000 years. However, this year marks a painful first for many Iranians experiencing the holiday during a time of violence, following aerial strikes from the U.S. and Israel that began on February 28.
With reports from the group Human Rights Activists in Iran tallying over 3,100 casualties, including many civilians, the gravity of the situation is inescapable. Amidst this chaos, Tehran has retaliated with attacks of its own.
As families prepare for Nowruz, the atmosphere is one of resilience mixed with despair. Amir, Mina's son, expresses concern for the future: At this rate, there might not even be much left of Iran. I don't want this to be our last Nowruz.
The usually bustling markets are noticeably quieter this year, with shoppers hesitant amidst concerns of airstrikes. While some like Parmis continue to celebrate small joys, encountering explosions in their daily lives highlights the war's pervasive impact.
Despite the somber mood, some are defiantly going ahead with traditional rituals, including preparing the Haft Sin table—an integral part of the celebrations. Maryam noted that while preparations are ongoing, the vibrancy of previous years feels missing.
Overall, this year's Nowruz symbolizes more than a new beginning; it reflects the tenacity of the Iranian spirit in the face of adversity, as many hold onto the hope for peace and renewal amidst the ongoing turmoil.
