DES MOINES, Iowa (RTW News) — Ian Roberts, the former superintendent of Iowa's largest school district, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly lying about his citizenship status. The indictment charges him with making false claims of being a U.S. citizen eligible for employment and possessing a firearm as an illegal alien.

Roberts, originally from Guyana, was detained on September 26 by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents after attempting to evade capture in his district-issued vehicle. A handgun was found concealed inside the vehicle, while three additional firearms were later discovered in his home during an investigation.

In 2023, Roberts was appointed to lead the Des Moines Public Schools, which serves approximately 30,000 students. The indictment highlights that he knowingly provided false information on a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Eligibility Verification Form (I-9) claiming U.S. citizenship.

The fallout from Roberts' arrest has been significant, leading to legal action against a consulting firm that played a role in his hiring. The district board is also reviewing expenditures related to Roberts, and school board chair Jackie Norris has recently withdrawn from her U.S. Senate campaign as a consequence of the unfolding situation.

As of now, Roberts remains in federal custody, facing serious charges while the community grapples with the implications of his appointment and subsequent actions.
