Article Text: In a startling revelation, Brazilian police announced on Tuesday the arrest of several individuals linked to an elite army unit over a conspiracy to assassinate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva just ahead of his presidential inauguration in 2022. This ambitious plot was allegedly devised to facilitate the continuity of Jair Bolsonaro’s far-right government after he lost the election.Among those detained are four military personnel, one of whom served as a senior aide to Bolsonaro, alongside a federal police agent. According to an unnamed police source, the individuals utilized sophisticated military expertise to meticulously plan the assassination of Lula, a leftist leader, and his chosen vice president, Geraldo Alckmin, set for December 15, 2022. The investigation also indicated that they intended to target a Supreme Court justice, whose identity has not been disclosed. The police’s statement highlighted a detailed operational framework developed by the suspects, outlining the necessary human and military resources needed to execute their plan. However, a lawyer representing Bolsonaro declared that his client had no prior knowledge or involvement in any such conspiracy, asserting, “The former president never agreed or participated in any type of plan of this nature.”As the investigation unfolds, authorities have not confirmed whether the assassination plot was successfully thwarted or if it was abandoned before any tangible action was taken. The incident raises alarms about the potential for political extremism and violence in Brazil's turbulent political landscape.
