CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – Community leaders and officials in Charlotte are rallying against an impending federal immigration enforcement operation, which they describe as an invasion. They are calling on residents to protest peacefully and document the agents' activities from a distance.
Mecklenburg County Commissioner Susan Rodriguez-McDowell expressed deep concern, stating, We are living in the strangest of times under the current administration. Her remarks came in light of Sheriff Garry McFadden's announcement regarding an enforcement sweep expected to start soon. While federal agencies have not confirmed specific operations, similar actions in other cities have heightened tensions.
State Representative Jordan Lopez condemned the use of aggressive tactics by federal agents, recounting instances where civilians were treated violently during immigration operations.
Local organizations are stepping forward by training volunteers on how to safely protest and document the potential enforcement actions, emphasizing immigrant rights in the face of uncertainty. Héctor Vaca from Action NC asserted that residents are reacting to what he termed a racist campaign of terror initiated by the Trump administration.
Concerns have arisen particularly because of the Trump administration's justification for increased enforcement based on violent crime statistics in Democratic-led cities. Community members stress that Charlotte, which is home to a diverse population of over 150,000 foreign-born residents, should not be treated as a battleground for political agendas.
Incoming council member JD Mazuera Arias advocated for the safety and dignity of immigrants, affirming that local resources would not support federal immigration operations. He remarked, Our Queen City will not become a staging ground for fear and urged residents to come together in solidarity.
As the timeline for federal actions approaches, the community remains vigilant and prepared to respond to any immigration enforcement activities with peaceful demonstrations and documentation.
