Malcolm Timbrell, a 70‑year‑old British expatriate, recounted how he survived a devastating wildfire that struck the Andalusian village of Bédar, where his wife Annette, 69, and 12 friends and neighbours were feared killed.
The flames advanced rapidly on Thursday evening, aided by strong winds and a dry landscape, crushing the low‑lying pockets of the village and seizing Malcolm’s home on a hillside. Despite the peril, he chose to return to his house to rescue their two cats, Charlie and Lilly, believing that letting the animals die would have cost their own lives.
While attempting to re‑join the group, Malcolm saw that his neighbours had abandoned their cars and attempted to walk through the advancing firewall, which travelled at over 20 kilometres per hour. The men and women who remained in vehicles were all trapped; four of the cars caught fire instantly, while the last two—though badly charred—survived, allowing Malcolm to enter and survive inside one, again aided by the presence of his cats.
After the feverish blaze sheared past, emergency crews rescued Malcolm. Later searches recovered the bodies of eight people near the couple’s home. Spanish authorities confirmed that the victims included three Britons and individuals from France, Belgium, and Spain. One of the deceased was a 93‑year‑old woman, believed to be British, who died in hospital from her injuries.
Malcolm, expressing gratitude for the support of friends from multiple nationalities, says he now awaits DNA‑based identification of the victims and will “probably just fall apart.” He notes that the local authorities were unable to deploy seaplanes or helicopters in time due to heavy smoke, while the swift, furious blaze was largely a confluence of weather conditions that made the response almost impossible.
