A 26‑year‑old British man was charged by Singaporean authorities after a 2024 incident where he stole a denim jacket from a retail display at Changi Airport. Surveillance footage showed him removing the jacket from a mannequin and exiting the store without paying, and he left Singapore soon after. Police re‑identified and arrested him in transit later that year, demonstrating a serious stance on shop theft. Singaporean law allows up to seven years in jail for theft, and authorities cited similar incidents earlier in the year to underline their zero‑tolerance policy.

Singapore police have charged a 26‑year‑old British national with theft more than two years after he allegedly stole a blue denim jacket from a shop in Changi Airport’s retail mall.

On the evening of 14 August 2024, a retail assistant noticed a jacket was missing from a display mannequin. Surveillance footage captured a man take the jacket and leave without paying. By the time police could confirm his identity, he had already departed Singapore.

The man was arrested on 15 August 2026 while in transit at the airport, and charges were filed on Tuesday. The jacket was valued at about S$350 ($275; £202).

“The police take a serious stance on shop theft and will deal firmly with offenders in accordance with the law,” the Singapore Police Force said. He must not assume he can evade detection simply by leaving Singapore after committing an offence.

“Offenders should not think they can escape by leaving the country,” the statement added.

The police highlighted another recent case: a 50‑year‑old Polish woman was arrested at the airport for stealing two perfume bottles from a terminal store and was charged with two counts of theft on Monday. Those convicted of theft in Singapore face up to seven years in prison.

Shoppers and travelers should remain vigilant, as airport security continues to tighten measures against shoplifting.
