WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. Park Police officer shot during what authorities termed an ambush has been released from the hospital, according to a recent post by the Park Police on its X account.

The officer, whose name has not been disclosed, was shot on Monday evening while driving an unmarked vehicle in a neighborhood near the Washington-Maryland border. In a press briefing, Park Police Chief Scott Brecht revealed that the officer was targeted during an investigation when two gunmen opened fire.

Although the officer sustained a shoulder injury, details regarding the ongoing investigation remain under wraps. A law enforcement official, who chose to remain anonymous, confirmed the nature of the injury.

The investigation is being pursued jointly by the Park Police and the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, D.C. Chief Brecht indicated that authorities are actively searching for two suspects connected to the shooting.

Adding to the urgency of the search, Washington’s interim police chief Jeffery Carroll noted that there is a possibility the gunmen were aware the officer was a member of law enforcement. Federal officials are providing assistance as the investigation unfolds.
