In brief

Over 100,000 scores by composer Arnold Schoenberg were lost in the recent Los Angeles wildfires, furthering the devastation caused by these calamities.

The Los Angeles wildfires have wreaked havoc, claiming at least 100,000 scores belonging to the acclaimed composer Arnold Schoenberg. The sheet music was stored at his family's music production firm in Pacific Palisades, which was devastated by flames last week. Thankfully, original manuscripts remain safe; however, the Belmont Music Publishing collection was a critical resource for orchestras and musicians who relied on these scores.Leon Botstein, the director of the American Symphony Orchestra, emphasized the vital role this collection played in music performances. Meanwhile, Schoenberg’s son, Larry, 83, recounted the loss, noting that the significant collection, stored behind his residence, was engulfed in flames along with other treasured memorabilia, such as photographs and letters.Larry expressed that the loss transcends merely physical destruction, highlighting the cultural impact on the artistic community dependent on these curated editions of Schoenberg's extensive works. Born in Vienna in 1874 to a Jewish family, Schoenberg made remarkable strides in music, particularly known for his innovative 12-tone technique before fleeing to America in 1933 to escape the Nazis. He ultimately settled in Los Angeles, where he continued to create groundbreaking compositions until his passing in 1951. Belmont Music Publishing is now contemplating the digitization of its lost collections, stating its hope to "rise from the ashes" in new digital forms. The wider context includes ongoing battles against wildfires devastating Los Angeles, with at least 24 fatalities reported, thousands of buildings destroyed, and tens of thousands of residents displaced. The largest blaze, which continues to cause destruction, has burned through over 24,000 acres in the Palisades area.
