Former bodyguard of Sean "Diddy" Combs, Joseph Sherman, has initiated a civil suit against Thalia Graves and her attorney Gloria Allred, among other defendants, over accusations of defamation and emotional distress. This legal action, filed on Friday in New York's Southern District, follows a lawsuit from Graves and Allred that named Sherman as a defendant in allegations of rape involving Combs. Sherman has responded vehemently, claiming that Graves attempted to blackmail him with the intent of coercing false testimony against Combs, providing text messages allegedly demonstrating her threats in his complaint.
In his filed suit, Joseph Sherman contends he ceased working for Combs in 1999 and was not present during the alleged incident in 2001 that Graves claims involved both Sherman and Combs. He maintains that he has never interacted with Graves and cites her attempts to manipulate him into compliance concerning the allegations as a significant basis for his legal actions.
Critics are calling attention to a possible pattern of misconduct surrounding Gloria Allred, suggesting this situation could be part of a broader strategy to undermine victims of Combs. Allred and her daughter Lisa Bloom have faced scrutiny over their motivations in various lawsuits, with Sherman being the first among Combs’ accusers to file a counter-suit against Allred's claims directly targeting him. Sherman's public denial of the allegations emerged swiftly after the initial accusations against him and Combs.
The story deepens with the suggestion that Gloria Allred and Mark Geragos, another well-known attorney, share less-than-neutral connections, described by some as "two sides of the same coin." Geragos has a controversial history involving multiple publicized legal cases where allegation of unethical conduct flourished, leading critics to speculate on his collaboration with Allred in matters linked to Combs.
Further complicating the narrative, the alleged influence of Anthony Pellicano—a convicted felon and former private investigator noted for dubious practices—looms large. Pellicano's supposed ties with Allred and Geragos have raised eyebrows, with references to his work across various high-profile legal cases notorious for claims of misconduct, notably involving Michael Jackson and O.J. Simpson.
This recent event has prompted calls for serious investigations into Allred’s practice, including possible racketeering claims linked to her former clients and suspicious collaborations with other lawyers. Sherman’s attorney, Darnell D. Crosland, insists that false accusations harm the credibility of real victims of sexual assault, urging accountability for those who profit from dishonest claims.
The unfolding legal battle highlights the complexities surrounding sexual assault allegations, the potential for abuse of the legal system, and the significant consequences for both accusers and the accused.
