In brief
In a significant shift, the people of Damascus are rediscovering the pleasures of life as they emerge from years of oppression under Bashar al-Assad's regime.
In Damascus, as the dust settles from a tumultuous period of war and regime change, the locals are reclaiming their beloved Mount Qasioun. After a decade of military closure and restrictions, this iconic spot overlooking the city is once again bustling with life, as residents gather to enjoy picnics, trade goods freely, and bask in the liberties they long missed.Mount Qasioun, which for years had become a bastion of military presence, is now a revived leisure destination, filled with laughter and community spirit. Sumaya Ainaya, a 56-year-old mother of four, reminisced about her joyful memories spent atop this mountain before the war erupted in 2011. She recalls colorful New Year's Eve celebrations turned somber as shadows of soldiers replaced the laughter. “Thank God, we’ve returned now — we feel like we can breathe again,” she said emotionally as her family prepared for a small celebration on the same mountaintop. This year's celebrations mark the first New Year's Eve for many in which they felt a sense of security, free from the oppressive atmosphere created by Assad's regime. “We feel like the city has returned to us,” echoed her son Muhammad Qatafani, a dental student witnessing this cultural rebirth.Across Damascus, similar stories unfold as residents venture back to previously restricted areas. Conversations that were once silenced are happening openly, and practices curtailed by decades of authoritarian rule are being revived. Ordinary Syrians are reclaiming not just physical spaces, but also a sense of ownership over their city, a sentiment lost during the regime's harsh control. The awakening in Damascus signifies more than just a return to normalcy; it embodies hope and a collective resilience that has emerged from the rubble of war. As the next chapters of Syria's future unfold, the people are determined to shape a narrative reflective of their aspirations and freedoms. This transformative moment serves as a poignant reminder that, despite struggles, the spirit of community and celebration can flourish once more.
