In brief

Authorities from the Philippine National Police reported that Elliot Eastman, a 26-year-old American residing in the Philippines, was likely murdered during his abduction in October. Following the testimony of a detained suspect, police believe he died on the same day he was taken.

The police have already arrested four men in connection with the case, while four additional suspects remain at large. Eastman, who was originally from Vermont, was taken from his home in Sibuco, Mindanao, by individuals posing as law enforcement officers on October 17. According to police accounts, he suffered two gunshot wounds—one in the leg and another in the stomach—before being forcibly taken away in a boat. Authorities speculate that his body was discarded at sea after the alleged murder.Living in the country since May, Eastman often shared his experiences through social media, including a YouTube channel where he showcased his daily life. He frequently acknowledged the dangerous reputation of coastal Mindanao for foreign tourists. His kidnapping was reported by his father-in-law, who noted that masked men stormed Eastman's residence before he attempted to flee and was shot. While kidnappings have decreased in recent years in the region, foreign governments, including the United States, continue to issue warnings for travelers due to potential threats from insurgent groups linked to such crimes.
