Suspected Arson Attack Targets Seven Churches in New Zealand
A series of suspected arson incidents have devastated multiple churches in Masterton, raising alarm in the community.
The incident unfolded early Saturday morning when emergency services received calls about the fires around 4:30 AM local time. Fire crews from the Wairarapa region quickly arrived on the scene to combat the flames. Reports indicate that notable damage occurred at the Anglican Church of the Epiphany, St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Masterton Baptist Church, and Equippers Church, all of which caught fire. Witness accounts describe the aftermath, including shattered windows, burnt furniture, and charred upholstery. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incidents.
Authorities have classified the fires as suspicious and have referred the cases to local police for investigation, with no arrests made to date. Masterton Mayor Gary Caffell expressed community shock and dismay over the attacks, emphasizing that such incidents are unexpected in their peaceful town. Local MP Mike Butterick also shared his sorrow and praised first responders.
In addition to the churches, a nearby funeral home chapel was set ablaze later in the morning, though it was unoccupied at the time. Police are appealing to witnesses for information and will increase patrols in Masterton, as well as in neighboring towns Featherston and Carterton, to reassure residents.
Social media has seen the circulation of a video where an individual claims responsibility for the arson, stating anti-religious and anti-monarchist views. This incident is part of a concerning trend, as religious buildings in New Zealand have recently been targets of similar attacks. Last year, an Auckland church endured two arson attempts in one night, while a mosque was also set on fire. Adding to the history of violence against religious sites, the 2019 Christchurch mosques shooting tragically claimed the lives of 51 individuals.
Given the gravity of these events, police and Fire and Emergency New Zealand have been contacted for additional statements.
