The operation involved a complex supply chain that necessitated the use of an abandoned shipwreck at sea as a refuelling point, emphasizing the elaborate strategies used by drug traffickers.
Dubbed Operation Black Shadow, this multinational raid saw police forces from Europe, the UK, South America, and the United States collaborate to execute plans months in the making. A total of 29 locations were searched, resulting in the seizure of 69 vehicles, including boats and jet skis, and significant cash and firearms were recovered. Authorities explained that the criminal organization employed advanced encrypted communications to evade capture, using satellite technology, difficult-to-trace phones, and coded conversations.
Spanish police lauded the operation for dismantling one of the largest criminal organizations engaged in cocaine trafficking, exposing a local network responsible for distributing the narcotics after their arrival in the Canary Islands.
