Major Cocaine Smuggling Operation Dismantled in the Canary Islands

In a coordinated international effort, police forces from various continents targeted a sophisticated drug trafficking network that operated via speedboats from South America, highlighting the intricate methods used by global smuggling syndicates.

A comprehensive crackdown on a cocaine smuggling operation has culminated in the seizure of approximately four tonnes of the drug, along with the arrest of 48 individuals across the Canaries. Authorities, including Spain's Policia Nacional and Europol, indicated that the gang utilized a fleet of speedboats to transit cocaine from Brazil and Colombia to Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote. The operation involved a complex supply chain that necessitated the use of an abandoned shipwreck at sea as a refuelling point, emphasizing the elaborate strategies used by drug traffickers.

Dubbed Operation Black Shadow, this multinational raid saw police forces from Europe, the UK, South America, and the United States collaborate to execute plans months in the making. A total of 29 locations were searched, resulting in the seizure of 69 vehicles, including boats and jet skis, and significant cash and firearms were recovered. Authorities explained that the criminal organization employed advanced encrypted communications to evade capture, using satellite technology, difficult-to-trace phones, and coded conversations.

Spanish police lauded the operation for dismantling one of the largest criminal organizations engaged in cocaine trafficking, exposing a local network responsible for distributing the narcotics after their arrival in the Canary Islands. The raids showcased armed officers executing searches and apprehending suspects, underscoring the ongoing battle against drug imports to Europe, which remains a lucrative market for South American cartels. Law enforcement had previously intercepted significant cocaine shipments, signifying a sustained effort to combat drug trade operations within the region.
