Grenade Attack Shakes Grenoble: A Quiet Night Turns to Chaos
A grenade explosion in a Grenoble bar leaves a dozen injured, raising concerns over possible links to organized crime rather than terrorism.
A grenade was thrown into the Aksehir bar in Grenoble, France, on Wednesday evening, injuring twelve people and leaving two in critical condition, according to local authorities. The violent incident occurred shortly after 20:00 local time (19:00 GMT) in the bustling Olympic Village neighborhood, which is popular among locals for gathering and watching sports.
While the specific motive behind the attack remains unclear, investigators suggested it may be related to “settling of scores”. Prosecutor Francois Touret-de-Courcey reported that eyewitnesses noted the suspected assailant may have also been armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle. However, he emphasized that there is no indication linking the incident to terrorism, characterizing it instead as “an act of extreme violence”.
With the bar crowded at the time of the attack, both police and firefighters swiftly responded, deploying around 80 personnel to the scene. The area was cordoned off for investigation purposes through Thursday morning. Deputy Mayor Chloe Pantel highlighted that the venue is a community gathering spot, particularly for football fans.
In a statement on X, Grenoble's Mayor Eric Piolle condemned the attack, labeling it a “criminal act of extraordinary violence,” and expressed gratitude towards the emergency services for their prompt response. The local police force is expected to maintain a presence in the area as investigations continue into potential connections to drug trafficking and organized crime.
