A retired mafia figure was brutally murdered, sparking an investigation into organized crime ties in France.
In a chilling act of violence, Jean-Pierre Maldera, a former mafia boss, was fatally shot while driving on the A41 motorway near Grenoble, France, on Wednesday morning. Known as a significant figure in the "Italo-Grenoblois" mafia during the 1980s and 1990s, Maldera was reportedly pursued in his vehicle before being attacked. Local media suggest that three to four gunmen were involved, employing a military-grade firearm, likely a Kalashnikov, to carry out the assassination.
Witnesses reported that Maldera attempted to flee on foot after abandoning his BMW but was ultimately caught by his pursuers. The assailants managed to escape the scene, leaving behind their burnt-out getaway vehicle, a stolen Renault Megane, discovered moments later in a nearby parking area.
This incident unfolds against the backdrop of Maldera's criminal history. He was previously convicted alongside his brother Robert Maldera, who vanished in 2015 under suspicious circumstances and was last seen leaving a meeting in Grenoble. Jean-Pierre had endured a long history with law enforcement, amassing multiple arrests dating back to the 1970s. Following his release from prison in the early 2000s, he seemed to have stepped back from his notorious lifestyle.
However, it remains uncertain whether he was still engaged in illicit activities at the time of his death. The violent nature of the attack has raised concerns about the potential resurgence of organized crime in the region, prompting local authorities to launch a full investigation.
