Vietnamese Influencer Arrested for Promoting Fake Health Gummies
Beauty queen Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien faces legal action for consumer deception regarding fraudulent fibre supplement claims.
Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien, who gained fame as the Miss Grand International 2021 titleholder, has been apprehended by Vietnamese law enforcement for promoting a bogus fibre supplement. The influencer aggressively marketed Kera Supergreens Gummies on her social media, claiming they boasted high fiber content. However, public outrage ensued after laboratory tests debunked these claims, revealing that each gummy contained only 16mg of fiber, way below the touted 200mg.
Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien collaborated with other influencers, Pham Quang Linh and Hang Du Muc, to promote the gummies, which they asserted were equivalent to consuming a plate of vegetables. Initial investigations indicated that these influencers formed a partnership with a local company to manufacture the gummies, which were revealed to use substandard ingredients.
Following consumer complaints, Vietnamese authorities initiated a probe that confirmed the misleading marketing and lack of clear labeling on the product's packaging, including undisclosed high levels of sorbitol—a component more commonly found in laxatives.
In March, all three influencers were fined after publicly apologizing, but actions escalated further in the following months. With manufacturers and company officials arrested, Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien was recently taken into custody for her part in misleading the public.
Reports suggest that over 100,000 boxes of the gummies were sold before the halt in sales ensued from the scandal. After her crowning in 2021, Nguyen became a cherished figure in Vietnam, endorsing numerous brands and featuring in various reality television shows, even receiving accolades from the government's highest ranks. The unfolding events mark a significant turn in the influencer’s career and a cautionary tale in the realm of social media endorsements.
