Trump and Vance Potential Victims of Chinese Cyber Espionage
U.S. officials reveal that cyber attackers linked to China may have targeted Donald Trump and JD Vance's communications systems.
U.S. cybersecurity sources have confirmed that former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance, may have been the targets of cybercriminals with connections to China. This alarming revelation comes from several insiders who spoke with CBS News, prompting the Trump-Vance campaign to be alerted about the potential breach of their electronic communications. Alongside the Trump and Vance campaign, individuals linked to the Harris-Walz campaign were also reportedly targeted in this expansive cyber operation.
Currently, it remains uncertain how much sensitive data may have been compromised. Both the Department of Justice and the FBI have refrained from commenting on the specifics of the attack concerning the candidates. However, in a collaborative statement, the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) asserted that they are actively investigating unauthorized access to telecommunications infrastructures allegedly orchestrated by actors associated with the People's Republic of China.
Upon uncovering this "malicious activity," federal agencies promptly alerted the implicated companies, rendered technical assistance, and began sharing intelligence to support other potential targets. They emphasized the ongoing nature of the investigation and their commitment to bolstering cyber defenses across the telecommunications sector.
Law enforcement is currently handling the inquiry as an espionage case rather than as an attempt to influence the election campaign. Just this month, reports surfaced indicating that U.S. telecommunications firms had fallen victim to a cyberattack, with Verizon being a notable entity potentially harboring compromised data linked to Trump and Vance.
Verizon's spokesperson acknowledged the situation, indicating that the company is cooperating with law enforcement to investigate the actions of "highly sophisticated nation-state actors" targeting U.S. telecom providers for intelligence-gathering efforts. The Trump campaign itself suffered a prior hacking incident earlier this year when three Iranian nationals were charged for efforts to disrupt the presidential campaign, emphasizing the persistent threat of foreign meddling in U.S. elections.
National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan noted during the summer that adversaries regard U.S. elections as ripe opportunities to undermine democratic processes and sow discord. A discussion in Congress earlier this year also featured FBI Director Christopher Wray warning that Chinese hackers were poised to "wreak havoc and cause real-world harm" to the United States.
