Strained Negotiations: Gaza Ceasefire Talks Hit an Impasse
Discussions between Israel and Hamas stall as key issues linger despite diplomatic efforts.
Negotiations between Israel and Hamas aimed at establishing a ceasefire in Gaza have reportedly stalled following three days of indirect discussions in Qatar, according to a Palestinian official. While hopes were raised during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's unscheduled second meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, the talks have hit key sticking points, notably over the distribution of humanitarian aid and the withdrawal of Israeli troops.
During a press briefing on Tuesday, U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff remarked that only one unresolved issue remained, fostering optimism for a potential agreement on a 60-day ceasefire by the week’s end. Netanyahu, in a statement, emphasized the focus of their discussions on the release of hostages, reiterating Israel's determination to not relent in their military pursuits against Hamas. "We aim to achieve the release of all our hostages, both living and deceased, and to diminish Hamas's military capabilities to ensure that Gaza never poses a threat again," he stated.
Despite the appearances of progress, a Palestinian official indicated that the negotiations were not advancing. The official pointed out that Israel's refusal to accept the unrestricted importation of humanitarian supplies through UN channels was a major impediment. Instead, Israel is pushing for a reconsideration of the existing "humiliating mechanism" for aid distribution tied to the U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.
Moreover, an additional complication stems from Israel’s continued occupation of territories within Gaza since March 18, coinciding with the resumption of military operations following the collapse of an earlier ceasefire. Qatar's foreign ministry spokesman stated the requirement for additional time to reach a breakthrough in talks.
The stakes remain high as these negotiations are aimed at concluding the ongoing 21-month conflict. The current proposal suggests a phased handover of 28 hostages from Hamas—10 alive and 18 deceased—while facilitating a substantial increase in humanitarian aid deliveries in return. Following the release of initial hostages, Israeli forces would gradually withdraw from certain areas of Gaza.
Amid these dialogue developments, violence continues to escalate with reports of airstrikes resulting in further fatalities. Israeli attacks have reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 20 people in southern Gaza and additional events at the al-Shati refugee camp. Since the onset of the conflict triggered by the October 7 Hamas assault, over 57,575 individuals have been reported killed in Gaza.
With both political and humanitarian consequences intertwined, the international community watches closely as these tense negotiations unfold.
