Pope Francis Makes Joyful Return to St. Peter's Square Post-Hospitalization
Pope Francis greets thousands at Vatican in his first public engagement after recent health challenges.
Pope Francis graced St. Peter's Square today, marking his first public appearance following a lengthy hospitalization that lasted five weeks. Seated in a wheelchair and with a breathing tube visible, the 88-year-old pontiff greeted a throng of cheering admirers, saying, "Hello to everybody. Happy Sunday to all of you, thank you very much."
His public debut occurred just days after he left the hospital on March 23, where he had also made a brief window appearance to bless crowds. Doctors had previously advised that he would require at least two months of rest at his residence after being treated for an infection that led to double pneumonia.
Vatican officials noted that the Pope's health had shown signs of improvement. According to a recent announcement, he is "in good spirits" and gradually resuming work-related activities. Health reports indicate that since his hospitalization beginning on February 14, the Pope experienced two critical moments when his life was at serious risk. Nevertheless, there has been progress in his breathing, movement, and vocal capabilities.
As of Friday, blood tests revealed a slight enhancement in his lung infection, and while he is still requiring supplemental oxygen, the amount has been reduced. At night, he uses high-flow oxygen as needed, a measure that accommodates his ongoing respiratory challenges.
Pope Francis has navigated a variety of health issues over the years, including a significant lung procedure at the age of 21 which has left him more vulnerable to infections. This current health scare adds to the history of his medical battles. Originally from Argentina, Pope Francis has now served as the leader of the Catholic Church for twelve years.
