Billy Joel Shares Positive Outlook After NPH Diagnosis
Legendary musician expresses optimism two months post-diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.
Billy Joel, the iconic singer-songwriter, has shared encouraging news about his health two months after revealing that he was diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), a rare brain disorder. During an appearance on Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast, the five-time Grammy award winner addressed his condition and stated, "I feel good. They keep referring to what I have as a brain disorder, so it sounds a lot worse than what I'm feeling."
Despite feeling optimistic, Joel admitted that he is still dealing with some balance issues related to the disorder. He had to cancel several concert dates in May when doctors indicated that his condition had worsened due to his recent performances. NPH, which predominantly affects individuals over 60, leads to fluid accumulation in the brain, impacting various senses and movement.
Earlier, in a statement posted on his Instagram, the 76-year-old indicated he is committed to ongoing physical therapy to address his health. His wife, Alexis, joined him in expressing gratitude for the prompt medical attention received and hopes for a swift recovery. Consequently, the legendary performer has postponed 17 shows in North America and Europe set for 2025 and 2026, including highlights at iconic venues such as Murrayfield in Edinburgh and Anfield in Liverpool.
Billy Joel, famed for timeless hits like "Uptown Girl" and "Piano Man," has enjoyed extensive touring and performed for audiences just last year, culminating in a record-breaking residency at Madison Square Garden that ended in February 2025. Shortly after, he faced a medical situation that required physical therapy following a mishap during his performance. As fans await his return to the stage, Joel's upbeat attitude offers hope for a successful recovery and future performances.
