Four Al Jazeera Journalists Die in Israeli Airstrike Near Al-Shifa Hospital
Journalists targeted while reporting from conflict zone, raising alarm over media safety.
Four journalists from Al Jazeera have been reported killed following an Israeli airstrike near the Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. The victims include correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh, along with cameramen Ibrahim Zaher and Mohammed Noufal. They were situated in a tent designated for journalists at the hospital's main gate when the strike occurred.
In the wake of the attack, Al Jazeera condemned the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) for what it termed a "campaign of incitement" against its staff in Gaza. The IDF claimed responsibility for the strike and labeled Anas al-Sharif as a member of Hamas, stating he was involved in terrorist operations. The military did not provide information on the other journalists who perished.
Before his death, al-Sharif had been sharing updates on social media regarding intense bombardment in Gaza City. A post made shortly thereafter seems to have been pre-scheduled, leading to speculation about the circumstances.
Following the tragedy, graphic footage emerged showing individuals carrying the bodies of the deceased. Reports reveal that those on-site were calling out Qreiqeh's name, while a press-vest-wearing individual identified al-Sharif among the casualties.
In July, Al Jazeera criticized the IDF for targeting its journalists and warned that such actions could justify assaults against reporters in the field. The IDF insisted that it acted with caution to prevent civilian casualties, referencing the use of advanced munitions and intelligence prior to airstrikes.
The Committee to Protect Journalists highlights a grim statistic, reporting that 186 journalists have been killed since the onset of the Israeli military campaign in Gaza in October 2023. The ongoing situation underscores concerns over the safety of journalists operating in conflict regions.
