Swedish Prosecutors Close Inquiry Linked to Kylian Mbappé After Lack of Evidence
The investigation into an alleged rape incident in Sweden, rumored to involve football star Kylian Mbappé, has been closed due to insufficient evidence.
Prosecutors in Sweden have announced the closure of an inquiry into an alleged rape case that had been linked to Kylian Mbappé, the French football captain. Marina Chirakova from the Swedish Prosecution Authority confirmed that the investigation, which was initiated following reports of an alleged incident in Stockholm, has concluded due to insufficient evidence to proceed.
Despite the media speculation, including reports from several Swedish outlets like Aftonbladet and Expressen, Mbappé was never officially named as a suspect by the authorities. When the allegations first surfaced in October, Mbappé's legal team stated that he intended to clear his name and was considering a defamation case against those spreading the claims. The football star himself has described the allegations as "fake news."
Chirakova, who led the initial investigation, stated, "The evidence was not sufficient to proceed further, and the investigation is therefore closed." The alleged incident reportedly occurred on October 10, when Mbappé was in Sweden. Following the media reports, police conducted searches at the Bank hotel, where the star stayed, and confiscated several items for evidence.
In his first public comments regarding the inquiry on the French TV show Clique, Mbappé asserted, "I haven't received anything, no summons... I'm not involved." His lawyer, Marie-Alix Canu-Bernard, previously denounced the media speculation as defamatory, emphasizing that the player is always in secure environments, minimizing any risks.
Mbappé, who recently scored his 50th Champions League goal and transferred to Real Madrid after stellar years at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), remains one of the most decorated players in football. Having clinched the World Cup in 2018 and scored a hat-trick in the 2022 final, he is a celebrated figure in the sport. Last year, he notably placed third for the Ballon d'Or and Best FIFA Men's Player awards, joining a fraternity of football greats.
