Israeli Raid Compromises Critical Hospital in Gaza Amid Ongoing Crisis
The WHO has lost contact with Kamal Adwan Hospital after reports of an Israeli military raid that left many patients and staff in distress.
The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Friday that communication with the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza had been disrupted following an Israeli military operation. This hospital is one of the last operational medical facilities in the area, severely impacting the healthcare situation.
According to health officials in Gaza, the Israeli forces raided the hospital, detaining hundreds of patients, medical staff, and displaced individuals. The local health ministry described the scenario inside the facility as “alarmingly deteriorating,” as Israeli troops searched the premises and fired gunshots, which caused panic among the estimated 600 people seeking refuge there. Tragically, reports confirmed that two children in the intensive care unit died when hospital generators failed to operate.
While the Israeli military confirmed its activities in the vicinity, it did not address specific allegations regarding the raid, mentioning only that their operation was driven by intelligence suggesting the presence of “terrorists and terrorist infrastructure.”
WHO Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed deep concern over the loss of contact, especially for the vulnerable populations being served there. He noted that a team had been present at the hospital to deliver necessary supplies the previous night. He also highlighted a prior evacuation effort where WHO personnel relocated 23 patients and 26 caregivers to another facility.
This incident is not the first for Kamal Adwan Hospital; it was previously besieged and raided by Israeli troops in December, raising significant alarms about the escalating military actions.
The backdrop of the raids coincides with the recent offensive targeting a resurgence of Hamas, which has drawn intense critiques from humanitarian organizations. The Israeli government agency overseeing Gaza operations, COGAT, stated that they had coordinated efforts to ensure patient evacuations while trying to maintain emergency services, though reports hint at a growing crisis in the region.
