Former Congressman Michael Grimm is facing life-altering medical challenges after a severe polo accident left him paralysed from the chest down. The incident occurred in September, as reported by his friend and former New York City council member, Vincent Ignizio, who has also initiated a fundraising campaign to assist with Grimm's medical expenses.
At 54, Grimm, a Marine veteran and former FBI agent, previously served parts of Staten Island and Brooklyn in the House of Representatives until his resignation in 2015, following a conviction for tax evasion. His fundraising page highlights his struggle for survival, noting that miraculous efforts by medical professionals have enabled him to persevere amid adversity. However, it adds that the road to recovery, culminating in hopes of regaining mobility, will require millions of dollars in treatment.
Currently, Grimm is receiving rehabilitation at the renowned Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in New Jersey, a facility known for restoring the health of notable figures, including the late actor Christopher Reeve. Ignizio expressed optimism regarding Grimm's determination to walk again.
In a poignant message, New York City Mayor Eric Adams conveyed his condolences and well wishes, acknowledging Grimm's service as a Marine veteran, particularly during this Veteran’s Day.
Grimm was first elected to Congress in 2010 but faced disruptions in his political career due to financial misconduct investigations that resulted in charges of under-reported income and tax evasion. In 2015, he was sentenced to eight months in prison for these violations.
