Former President Muhammadu Buhari's Body Set for Funeral in Hometown

The remains of Nigeria’s ex-leader Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London, will be returned home for a simple burial in Daura.


Buhari's family has confirmed that he will be interred later today, as Nigeria mourns a dual-leader who shaped its history.

Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 82 in a London clinic, is being flown back to Nigeria for burial in his birthplace of Daura, located in Katsina state. Katsina state Governor Dikko Radda, currently in London with Buhari's family, stated that the burial is scheduled for later today. The body is expected to be transported back home in the morning, accompanied by Nigeria's Vice-President Kashim Shettima, who confirmed the burial plans via social media.

Buhari's death came after a prolonged battle with health issues, though the exact circumstances were not revealed. Islamic scholar Abdullahi Garangamawa noted that the burial will adhere to Islamic customs, with the ceremony being as straightforward as possible. "The only thing that could delay the burial is if the body arrives in Daura after nightfall, as night burials are frowned upon in Islam," he explained.

Tributes have been flowing in for the late leader, who unique in Nigeria's political landscape for serving twice as both a military and a civilian president. Former President Goodluck Jonathan described Buhari as selfless and patriotic, while former military ruler General Ibrahim Babangida praised him for being a moral beacon even post-retirement. Current President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared a national mourning period of seven days in Buhari's honor, and the nation will pay respect through ceremonial actions, including flags flown at half-mast.

As the nation reflects on Buhari's legacy, the upcoming simple burial in Daura marks a poignant farewell to a significant figure in Nigeria's history.
