Gabonese Football Coach Banned for Life Amid Sexual Abuse Scandal

Fifa imposes lifetime ban on Patrick Assoumou Eyi, following sexual abuse allegations upheld by independent investigations.

Fifa has banned former Gabonese football coach Patrick Assoumou Eyi for life after multiple allegations of sexual abuse were confirmed, with calls for increased safety measures in Gabonese football.

Fifa has stated that Patrick Assoumou Eyi, the former head coach of Gabon's national youth teams, has been handed a life ban from all football-related activities due to his involvement in the sexual abuse of young players. This decision follows a thorough investigation triggered by a BBC Africa Eye report which unveiled the prevalence of abuse in Gabonese football.

The players' union Fifpro expressed its support for the ban but emphasized that further actions are necessary for the safety of players, demanding that all individuals involved in the abuse schemes be brought to justice. Eyi, also known as Capello, had a significant influence in Gabonese youth football, controlling player selection and was alleged to have exploited young athletes for his gain.

Eyi faced legal repercussions after admitting to charges including rape and exploitation of minors, which were brought to light by the Guardian in 2021. Following Fifa’s investigation, he has now been fined one million Swiss francs and remains incarcerated.

Victims have bravely come forward, revealing a history of abuse that reportedly spans over three decades. They have stated that the abuse continued unchecked due to a culture of silence and neglect within football governing bodies like Fifa and Fegafoot. Although these organizations have denied any wrongdoing in protecting vulnerable young players, the scandal has highlighted significant lapses in safeguarding measures.

One unnamed victim expressed their relief at the ban but voiced concerns over the larger network of abuse still at play, reiterating the imperative need for systemic changes within Gabonese football. Further testimonies from victims and witnesses underscore the urgent need for reform beyond punitive measures against individual perpetrators.

The conversation now turns to the responsibility of governing bodies to ensure the safety of young athletes in all sports, as the scandal unfolds and the quest for justice continues.
