**French Surgeon Sentenced to 20 Years for Mass Child Abuse**
A retired surgeon has been sentenced after admitting to the abuse of nearly 300 victims, mainly children, in a case that has shocked France.
In a landmark ruling on Wednesday, a French court sentenced former surgeon Joël Le Scouarnec to 20 years in prison after he confessed to abusing 299 victims, primarily children. This case marks the largest of its kind in French history, with the judge highlighting the heinous nature of the crimes committed against already vulnerable patients in a hospital setting.
Judge Aude Buresi expressed her dismay, stating, “It was predation on victims the most vulnerable.” Beyond his prison term, Le Scouarnec is permanently barred from practicing medicine and interacting with minors. The ruling mandates that he serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before he can be considered for parole.
The case has brought to light serious deficiencies in both the legal and medical systems that enabled Le Scouarnec to continue his work with children even after a previous conviction in 2005 for possessing child abuse imagery. He received only a suspended four-month sentence but remained in his role until his arrest in 2017.
As the trial unfolded, it coincided with a growing movement in France addressing sexual violence, as more victims come forward and cases fill the courts. However, many victims of Le Scouarnec reported feeling overshadowed by the broader discussions, expressing frustration at the lack of support and societal awareness. Christine Trouvé, a mother of one of the victims, articulated their disappointment: “What we are waiting for is society to understand this could happen to anyone.”
