Northern Queensland communities face severe impact as residents prepare to return home after historic rainfall.
Floodwaters have wreaked havoc across northern Queensland, with Queensland's Premier David Crisafulli describing the damage to local communities as "incredible." Despite earlier forecasts predicting dire conditions, the area has seen an easing of adverse weather which is allowing thousands of evacuated residents to return home by Tuesday.
Heavy rainfall of nearly 2 meters (6.5 feet) inundated the region since last Saturday, leading to significant flooding, power outages, and ongoing flood warnings. The premier, speaking to the ABC, noted that while the flooding had posed a major disaster for residents, recent weather changes were favorable, resulting in only drizzle overnight in Townsville and alleviating fears that thousands of homes were at risk.
Residents in six suburbs of Townsville appeared to have narrowly escaped major inundation due to changing conditions, prompting the premier to state that they may have "dodged a bullet." However, reports from areas further north including Ingham and Cardwell indicate severe communication issues and road damage, complicating recovery efforts.
Crisafulli expressed deep concern over the extensive damage, recalling his childhood in Ingham and noting he had seen shocking images of waterlogged businesses in regions previously thought to be safe. Current estimates reveal over 8,000 properties are still experiencing power outages, and the recovery process is expected to be lengthy as the full extent of the disaster is assessed.
